Promises

HESE HAVE BEEN SOME TOUGH DAYS.

LOGOI’s founder, Dr. Les Thompson, has been hospitalized for over a month now with a variety of health issues. Dr. Les is not only my mentor and my colleague, he is my dad. It’s been rough watching him struggle.

During one particularly difficult time, the doctors suggested we should gather family members. Family poured in from around the country to see dad, grandpa, brother, and friend. At one point I leaned in to give him a kiss and he asked me in a quiet voice if I was ready to let him go. My response was a loud and clear, “NO!” Could I ever be ready?

Carolyn is constantly by his side caring for him; loving him. This month it will be 50 years since they married. Mom was just 19 when they began their grand adventure together. Amazing chapters fill their story of lives dedicated to serving the King of Kings. It’s a book that should be written.

Now, before I get too far down this road, I’m quick to remind myself that Dad could outlive us all. He’s proven to be far more resilient than some of these well-trained doctors have thought. And when he rallies, it’s best to have a notepad handy, as he’s right back at work directing us from his hospital bed in various projects and ideas.

Indeed, Dad is teaching me even now. There is a confident assurance that despite temporary struggles and pain, every one of God’s promises are true. As you would expect, few doctors or nurses walk into Dad’s hospital room without hearing the Gospel. “I know where I’m going,” he’s told more than one, “Do you?” When he’s able, he autographs a book and tenderly talks about the One who, even now, is holding his hand and leading him forward.

HERE IS NO DOUBT he is clinging to the promises of his Lord and Savior; “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going” (John 14:1-4 NLT).

It is the promises of our Heavenly Father that Dad has taught me and a host of others his entire life. Promises that shape our lives. Promises we can trust. Promises that will never fail. Promises that, in God’s perfect timing, will always come true.

Dad has always loved the Psalms. What comfort and hope are found in these beautiful passages! Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for Dad. In spite of the struggle, what joy we have knowing the God he loves and serves is by his side. Thank you for your prayers.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:1-6 NLT).

IN HIS LOVE,

ED THOMPSON
