Oswald J. Smith

Oswald J. Smith (November 8, 1889 – January 25, 1986) was a Canadian pastor, author, and missions advocate. He founded The People’s Church in Toronto in 1928. Smith attended the Toronto Bible Training School, the Manitoba Presbyterian College in Winnipeg, and the McCormick Seminary in Chicago. Smith was ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church of Canada in 1918. Over the eighty years he dedicated to the ministry, he preached more than 12,000 sermons in 80 countries.

As an author, he published some 35 books (with translations into 128 languages) which have sold over a million copies. His 1,200 hymns and poems made him one of the most widely used song writers.

On September 12, 1916, he married Daisy Billings and had three children, Glen, Hope, Paul.
