The Best Dad in the Whole Universe!

n old Calvin & Hobbs comic strip has six-year-old Calvin telling his dad, “I’ve decided I want to be a millionaire when I grow up.” His dad looks at Calvin and says, “Well, you’ll have to work pretty hard to get a million dollars.” Calvin quickly answers, “No I won’t, you will. I just want to inherit it.”

Just a couple years ago when I was in high school… a friend on the football team invited me to go with him to a magic show on Miami Beach. I remember pulling up to his humble home which looked to be one classroom shy of being bigger than our high school. I really had no idea my buddy’s family had money, but when his mother asked if we wanted the butler to drive us in the Bentley, I started to put two and two together.

There’s another type of inheritance we receive from our fathers which God built right into our DNA. A study published in Nature Genetics in 2015 suggests that perhaps 60% of our DNA makeup comes from our dad.

Discover Magazine (March 2015) restated the results of the study by saying, “You may have inherited your mother’s eyes, but, genetically speaking, you use more DNA passed down from your father.

Perhaps that’s why sometimes when I wake up early in the morning and look in the mirror I say, “Dad?”

t’s Father’s Day and of course I’m thinking about my dad. While I’m very pleased my inherited chromosomes are packed full of his DNA, the idea of receiving a Bentley or some other financial inheritance from my missionary Dad never much came to mind. But he did talk much about an infinitely grander inheritance. One which “moth or rust could never destroy” (see Matthew 6:19-24).

Here at LOGOI, we love talking and teaching about the great inheritance awaiting those who believe in Jesus. As the Apostle Paul explains, “Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir” (Galatians 4:7).

So in honor of Father’s Day, I hope your heart swells with joy and wonder as you read this Inheritance Certificate prepared by my dad some years back. We’ve pointed to it before as an example of our work and ministry, but also as a way to encourage and remind us of God’s amazing promises awaiting us.

It’s another great way to celebrate LOGOI’s 50 years of ministry! Of course, we do pray God will encourage you to joyfully give as He enables. You are our ministry partner and God is using you to help tell others about this glorious inheritance. And just remember, every $5 you give provides a Latin pastor and leader to receive an entire month of free Bible resources, help, and encouragement.

P.S. Join us at our LOGOI family video and comments remembrances and thankfulness for LOGOI’s 50 Year Anniversary! In English and Spanish.
