NOTE from Les:

As I read my Adoption Certificate, I became very embarrassed. My mind went back to a little boy in Colombia…

I was teaching in Colombia when I met a man who was the janitor of the church.  I learned he was taking care of his grandson because both his parents had died.  We became friends and I took him and his grandson to dinner. I was able to buy the boy some clothes and tried to give them a few comforts while I was there.  I was shocked when suddenly, with great tears and emotion, the boy’s grandpa asked me to please adopt his grandson and give him the chance to have a decent life.  I was speechless.  I already had four boys and a very busy life. How could I possibly take care of one more?  With great sadness, I refused.  The best I could do was give the Grandpa money, which I knew would only help them for a little while.

I have always wept over my decision. After all, without any good reason, Jesus adopted me.

NOTE from Les:

I had an uncle who loved causing trouble.  His name was Cliff and he seemed to look for ways to be rebellious and rejected anything to do with God.  This went on for almost all of Cliff’s teenage years.

One day, after a particularly new “low” even for Cliff, his Dad met him at the door and said, “Let’s go to the barn.” Cliff knew it meant another whipping, but he just sneered.  When they got to the barn, however, Cliff watched as his Father took off his shirt.   “Cliff,” his Dad said with tears running down his face, “your actions and attitude against God are bringing us such sadness that it’s breaking our hearts.  So this time, I am going to take the punishment you deserve.”

To Cliff’s horror, his Dad handed him the whip and demanded that Cliff use it on him. Cliff refused, but his Dad insisted until finally, with great sobs and anguish, Cliff took the whip and struck his Father.  His Dad made him strike him again and again. With every blow, Cliff sunk further and further to his knees until his sobs and anguish were too great to continue.  His Dad looked him in the eye and said, “You can go free now, my Son, I’ve taken your punishment!”

This dramatic and true lesson changed my Uncle Cliff.  He left the barn that day a shaken and changed man.  I’m so pleased to say he went on to become a man who loved and served the Lord the rest of his life as a missionary in Africa.

NOTE from Les:

Now, those are some presents!  There is nothing that can compare with those gifts!  I encourage you to take some time and read about these gifts in God’s Word.  A summary can be found in Ephesians 1:1-14.  These amazing gifts were given to me, Leslie James Thompson, when I was just a boy.  I believed Jesus was exactly who he claimed to be—God’s very own son—and that these gifts were for me.  They were absolutely free.  By faith, I simply had to receive them.  I have lived my entire life knowing these gifts were mine.  And all I can do is say, “Thank you!”

So, what do you want for Christmas?

There are three gifts waiting for you just as they were for the Roman jailer who had imprisoned Paul and Silas.  “He brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’  They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household'” (see Acts 16: 25-31).

That jailer had an amazing Christmas that day…so can you!
